Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme: Volunteer Scotland and Parent Groups

The Disclosure (Scotland) Act 2020 introduced some important changes to the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. Read Disclosure Scotland's guide specifically for parent groups to help your group to navigate the changes and assess whether your group undertakes regulated roles and therefore needs to have some of its members PVGed.

If you do require PVGs, voluntary parent-run groups such as Parent Councils and PTAs can access free PVG checks for volunteers through Volunteer Scotland.

Volunteer Scotland has guidance on its website to help parent-run groups as well useful templates on this page.

The following are of most relevance to parent-run groups:

  • Regulated Roles Checklist – Children (Word doc)
  • Holding a Position of Responsibility - Regulated Role (PDF)
  • Making a Referral - Sample Guidance and Policy (Word doc)
  • Secure Handling of Disclosure Information - Guidance and Policy (Word doc)

Your group can enrol with Volunteer Scotland Disclosure Services (VSDS) here.

All enrolled signatories with VSDS must sign a declaration to confirm that they will follow and adhere to the Code of Practice.
