Supporting Mental Health

We've brought together a list of websites and helplines which support mental health.  

For Everyone

  • Parent Club's Mental Health and Wellbeing section covers children, young people and parents/carers.
  • Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH) is Scotland’s national mental health charity. The SAMH website has a useful general guide to mental health as well as resources about specific mental health problems and information on self-help and wellbeing. Resources are for those with problems and for those who support people with mental health issues
  • Breathing Space runs a helpline for people in Scotland who need someone to talk to when they feel low on 0800 83 85 87 (evenings at as 30 March 2020 but due to expand because of coronavirus)
  • See Me is Scotland’s programme to tackle mental health stigma and discrimination. The See Me social media platforms often signpost useful information about mental health
  • Anxiety UK has lots of information on different anxiety conditions
  • Mind, the mental health charity, offers support and extensive information on different mental health conditions
  • The Mental Health Foundation website has advice on looking after your mental health, and A to Z of mental health, where to find help and information on Make it Count, the campaign in Scottish schools
  • Samaritans offers a 24 hour helpline on 116 123. The website signposts to organisations which can help with specific issues eg bereavement
  • Beat Eating Disorders has an online support service as well as lots of information about eating disorders
  • Self Harm UK focuses on self-harm recovery, insight and support
  • BBC Headroom Mental Health Toolkit includes everyday tips, sounds to relax your mind, strategies to cope with parenting right now and films to get you talking
  • Useful resource for parents via GLOW 

 For Children and Young People

  •  Childline offers advice and support to children and young people online here and on the phone 0800 1111
  •  Young Minds is a UK campaign organisation with a text-based helpline. The website has information for parents too and a parent helpline on 0808 802 5544 
  • Children’s Health Scotland offers some general information 
  • See Me Scotland has resources for young people
  • The Mental Health Foundation Scotland offers the Make it Count Guide for pupils
  • TalkTime Scotland offers free professional counselling to anyone aged 12-25 who is physically disabled or has a long-term physical health condition. To book an initial appointment just ring or text 07774 210104.  Alternatively, you can send an email to talktimescotland@gmail.com

For Parents and Families

  • Place2Be's website Parenting Smart has lots of accessible  information with videos on supporting children's mental health
  • Young Minds also offers help and advice to parents and a helpline 0808 802 5544
  • Children 1st runs Parentline on 08000 28 22 33 and offers specific information on mental health and wellbeing here 
  • The Mental Health Foundation Scotland has its Make it Count  Guide for parents/carers 
  • See Me Scotland has information for adults here
  • Andy's Man Club (suicide prevention for men).
