SQA Results Day 2022: Congratulations from Connect

9th August 2022

Connect's Results Day message, 9 August 2022

Patrick McGlinchey, Executive Director of parents’ organisation, Connect said:

“Connect congratulates students, families, and school staff on today’s SQA results. The results are the culmination of years' worth of dedication and effort from all involved, and today we celebrate that collective success.

The last two years have been difficult for many, but this doesn’t detract from the learning achieved – it makes it even more remarkable.

As young people prepare for their next steps, we call on educators and employers to support them in doing so with confidence and hope, and we remind young people that, whatever your results – there are always options and different pathways to explore.

The return to exams has seen the attainment gap widen in comparison to last year when learners were assessed by teachers following SQA frameworks, though this is ‘similar or narrower’ compared to 2019. Despite the promise of more ‘generous’ grade boundaries to account for the disruption to learning this year, this shows how inequality is still baked into the system for the most disadvantaged.

The replacement of SQA and the Louise Hayward review into qualifications and assessment must be opportunities to build a fairer system for all learners.

Young people, families, and school staff have shown great resilience and determination during the COVID pandemic, coping with unprecedented pressures and challenges. We congratulate them on all their efforts and achievements.”
