Scottish Government: Schools - Responding to Substance Use Guidance is Published

11th May 2026

The Scottish Government has published new guidance, Schools – responding to substance use: guidance. Connect previously provided feedback on the draft guidance, and we are pleased to see that our input has been taken onboard in the final version. Read a summary for parents of the key points in the guidance and Connect's response to its publication here.

The purpose of the guidance is to support education authorities and schools to develop or update their responses to substance use amongst young people in schools and focuses on prevention and early intervention, as part of a wider approach to relationships and behaviour policy in Scottish schools. This guidance covers both age-restricted substances such as vapes, cigarettes and alcohol, and illegal substances.
