Education Reform: Connect's Consultation Response and Survey Reports

1st December 2021

A massive thank you from Professor Ken Muir (and of course from us!) to those parents and carers who took part in Connect's Education Reform surveys, one on recognising achievement in secondary school and the other on school inspections.

In Reflecting and Recognising Young People's Skills and Achievements in Secondary Schools, parents were asked about course options for young people in schools, continuous assessment, external exams, whether three consecutive years of exams were too much for young people and more.  The survey findings reveal diverse views but - contrary to what is often said about parents and exams - the majority of respondents did not think exams were fair to all young people and most thought the experience of three years of exams was too much. Connect is calling for an education system that is genuinely centred on young people and on meeting their needs.

In Involving Parents in School Inspections and Improvement, parents overwhelmingly felt they had an important role to play in both inspection and school improvement. Connect is calling for parents to be much more involved in both.

We submitted the raw data from the surveys to Professor Muir on your behalf, as well as a consultation response from Connect which was shaped by the surveys. In addition, Professor Muir has received Connect's survey reports which include clear calls for change and improvement.  You can read Connect's consultation response and the two survey reports below:
