'The Parent Council organised a day to revamp certain areas of the school playground. We had input from the school on what they would like done and planned the work in advance, organising materials, skips, a mini digger, and parents with particular skills where required. Volunteers were fed well with bacon rolls, biscuits, tea, coffee and juice which kept everyone happy. We managed to build a large sandpit for some sit-on diggers, dig up a section of turf and replace it with bark chips to make a new wooden block play space, replant all the planters in the school, replace an outdoor blackboard and repair/replace a basketball goal stand. Staff members from the school, parent council members, and other parents gave up their time to help. The biggest success was seeing how much the sandpit is appreciated and used by the children. The Monday after the work was done, they were queuing up to have a turn. The event went really well and we achieved everything we set out to do. It would have been nice to have a few more parents there but those that came along worked really hard to make the day a success. We’re planning to do some improvements to the back playground in the spring. The Parent Council used funds obtained from regular fundraising events to purchase materials, and the school used some funds that were part of a legacy donation to purchase wooden blocks and a storage unit. A mini digger and skip hire were provided free by local companies.'
