Bruntsfield Primary School: Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity and inclusion - creating an A+ Parents Group at Bruntsfield Primary School

What did you do?
In order to help improve the education of minority children and build stronger relations with parents to make them feel included and listened to, our Parent Council funded the creation of an A+ Parents Group.

This was a safe space for parents of all minority ethinicities to ask questions and ensure their voices were heard. Majority ethnic families were also invited to participate to learn and share their experiences too.

A+ Group is for us to uphold the rights and needs of our children for an excellent and empowering experience at school. We will focus on their Education and Cultural Rights, and encourage the school to implement a Global curriculum.

This project is facilitated by an independent Community worker who is also a parent at Bruntsfield Primary School and it is funded by the Parent Council, and will run for a calendar year from June 2021 to June 2022.

A+ Group is a ‘safe space’ for positive action at Bruntsfield Primary School. You can

explore matters that are important to you and your child
develop ideas and recommendations with other Black and Asian families
access interpreting & translating support to make your views fully heard
learn about Children’s Rights to Education
suggest improvements now for your child’s future
share your own strengths, skills & contribution with the school community
speak directly with the leaders of the school and parent council

This is the time to make positive action happen.

Bruntsfield Primary School and Parent Council want to improve.

City of Edinburgh Council has a new action plan for Equality.

The Scottish Parliament has voted for all Children’s Rights to be enshrined in law in Scotland.

Black, Asian and ‘Ethnic Minority’ Parents & Carers have essential knowledge, skills and experience for schools to make meaningful changes right now.

Join the A+ Group to help make BPS the best Rights-respecting school for ALL children!

Who was involved?
All parents and senior staff.

What was the biggest success?
This was seen by all parents as a great way to foster inclusion and ensure events and clubs, for example, were open to all.

Would you do anything differently?
Ensuring everything including emails were tranlated into a range of languages which are currently in the school - including ensuring the correct language variants were used. It would have been good to engage teachers in the group too.

Are you going to continue with this work, or has it inspired you to do something else?
Yes - this has been a great success and is something we want to continue.

Source of funding (if any)?
Parent Council
