Decision Making

Parents have legal rights to be involved in many aspects of their child's education and in the life of the school.  However, parents often need  information, support and encouragement to take part in the decision-making processes in schools and during their child's education.   School communities can benefit greatly from the perspectives, knowledge and experience that parents bring.  It is important that parents are made to feel welcome  and included as they participate in school decision-making.   Developing leadership skills and learning to represent other parents are fantastic opportunities for parents too!

Tips for schools, teachers and parent groups to involve parents in decision-making

For example, schools, teachers and parent groups can

  • ensure that they have at least one active parent group (Parent Council, PTA etc)
  • involve parent representatives in school improvement planning and on school committees
  • include parents (and pupils!) in the selection of school staff.
